To move on up in Hogwarts, it all depends on how many House Points you accumulate for your House.
House Points will be reset, and the House Cup awarded, at the end of each school year. The imaginary Hogwarts month is posted on the main page of the forum. The school year starts in September and ends in June.
Your own house points will be listed as your "karma."
First Year: 0 House Points
Second Year: 100 House Points
Third Year: 250 House Points
Fourth Year: 500 House Points
Fifth Year: 1,000 House Points
Sixth Year: 2,500 House Points
Seventh Year: 5,000 House Points
Hogwarts Graduate: 7,500 House Points
